Is your business paying attention to rituals in the workplace culture?
A Harvard Business Review website blog by Heidi Grant Halvorson, associate director for the Motivation Science Center at the Columbia University Business School, says:
‘Rituals in the workplace can reinforce the behaviors we want, create focus and a sense of belonging, and make change stick.’
Halvorson comments that rituals capitalise on our brain’s ability to direct our behaviour on autopilot, allowing us to reach our goals, even when we are distracted or preoccupied with other things.
If employees perform rituals as part of their jobs, they are likely to find their jobs more rewarding. And if consumers use a ritual to experience your product, they are likely to enjoy it more and be willing to pay more for it.
How does ritual increase value?
Evidence suggests that ritual creates and enhances people’s sense of personal involvement with their work and or with a product/service, which lifts the level of value they associate with that work or product/service.
In any high performance culture you will always find a rich and widespread acceptance and use of rituals.
