The Thought Leader Million Dollar Expert Programme (MDE) I mentor shows people how to become a thought leading practitioner in their chosen area of expertise/interest, and build themselves a thriving, profitable practice Last week, while talking about this programme, It struck me that some of the reasons traditional thinking about leadership and leadership development is struggling to equip people to be experienced as effective leaders, is because a lot of leadership development work continues to; engage the 'Head,' (What leadership is where come from..) train the 'Hands' (How to be a leader) and forget the 'Heart.' (Why be a leader?)

A key strength of the Thought Leader MDE programme is that the start point is with the 'Heart' uncovering and focussing the passion/motivation/desire that someone has to be a practitioner* in the first place. The 'Why' comes first the 'What & How' comes second.
* (Practitioner: A person actively engaged in a discipline, or profession)

Many managers I meet still believe being asked/expected to be a leader is an addition to the job. They don't have the Heart for it and certainly don't see themselves as a leadership practitioner. And I believe that not seeing themselves as a leadership practitioner, is a key distinction between 'engaged' and 'disengaged' leaders.

When Leadership Development enables people to determine why they would want to be a practitioner of leadership, then the focus of the development work can become on being an exceptional practitioner of leadership, opening up relevance for developing skills/techniques not covered in 'mainstream' leadership development .
