I'm often involved in mentoring leaders on ways their organizations can use their company history to create an engaging and authentic story of who the organization is, why they exist and what they represent. When they create and enthusiastically tell these stories... they can leverage the three parts of unlocking the power of cultures. Creating work worth doing, having leaders worth following and cultures worth belonging to.

I've recently worked with 2 sales organizations moving from transactional selling to relational selling, helping them to understand that having an engaging story to tell, is a key capability for developing the supportive workplace culture(s) they'll need to sustain the changes they're making.

Too many companies talk about the need to have strong customer relationships yet don't give those customers (or even their own employees) any emotional connection with their company. They maintain the relationship through transactions, offers, packages, 'club' membership..., not through emotional connection. Engaging stories create emotional connection. Without emotional connection you can't have a meaning-full relationship and if the relationship is not meaningful there is little motivation to maintain/nurture it.

In New Zealand their is a 16 year old company called 'Icebreaker; founded on a great story and strong founder vision. Their story if fundamental to the ongoing success of the company . You can read there story HERE

In Austria there is a 107 year old company 'Muehlbauer Headware' that used their story to resuscitate themselves and create new markets and continued growth. "The special thing about us" says managing director Klaus Muehlbauer "is our tradition and story that sits within a strong contemporary fashion context." You can read more about their story HERE

Both these companies answered some fundamental questions to help them create engaging stories for their employees and customers

If you're up for checking how your organizations story stacks up, answer these questions.
What makes your product or service worth buying? Not financially but emotionally. What are your customers and employees 'buying' into? What have you given them that they can tell other about why they Iove to work/do business with you or buy your product/service?

The whole increase of social/viral marketing makes having an engaging story for people to pass on, ever more important.
