When i've talked about why 'Chiefing' is critical for leaders in organizations looking to engage their people with both the organization and it's strategies, the old saying 'too many chiefs not enough indians' pops up from time to time, usually said by the cynics sitting round the table.

For organizations looking to engage their people, you can't have too many 'Chiefs.' What you can have, and often get, is too many people acting like they think they are chiefs. In organizational cultures those 'wanna be' people typically don't challenge the real chiefs, as happens within some tribal cultures, instead they moan about them and undermine the culture by spreading cynical viewpoints and gossip. Organizations that are looking to unlock the power of their cultures, need to get rid of the 'wanna be's' and have as many leaders, capable of 'Chiefing their Tribes,' as they can get.
