Collaborative Rivalry© A generator of innovation
Companies who are working on being innovative may be hampering themselves by focussing on creating collaboration over rivalry. For some companies, fostering a culture of what i've termed Collaborative Rivalry© can be exactly what they need...

One of the dynamics that can be lost when building a collaborative culture is the motivation that can come from internal rivalry. This form of motivation can be a positive for organizations if the rivalry is purpose based as opposed to being outcome or ego based.

When rival groups or individuals are focused on a shared purpose, bigger than the outcome, e.g. new system, product, service, then they can constructively share information and resources with 'competitors' while being highly motivated to 'win' but not at any cost.

The Renaissance gives us examples of where such rivalry could be used to foster innovation and creativity. During that period, artists and craftsmen were usually exposed to what the Italians called paragone. With paragone or comparison, works of masters were placed alongside each other to openly compare, celebrate (and discuss) differences in technique and approaches. These celebrations and discussions/critiques were intended to encourage the creation of even greater works, motivating the masters to innovate new techniques and think more creatively. The result was often the creation of works and techniques even the masters themselves may have initially thought beyond them.

Q. Are you building collaboration in your organization, at the detriment of the innovation and creativity you want?
