Innovation. Thinking makes it so.

When ferries became my mode of transport for getting to town, cafes become my 'second home', and a  great thing about cafes, if you pick the right ones, are their magazine selection. So there I was, in one of my 'second homes'  reading yet another article on why innovation is our way to redemption and saviour from the calamities which have befallen businesses and countries..

So there I was, in one of my 'second homes'  reading yet another article on why innovation is our way to redemption and saviour from the calamities which have befallen businesses and countries. Now, whilst I might argue that innovation from a number of people got us into 'this mess' (who says creating prime mortgages wasn't an innovation?)  I was more interested in seeing the repeating 'classifications' of innovation typically featured in business magazines. Namely  product and service.

Why the emphasis on these categories? Yes the words resonate with business people (and consumers) and yes they are tangible, in that we can see an innovative product and experience innovative service, but I'm not sure either of these can happen without innovative thinking!

For leaders in business innovative thinking can only happen when there is an environment where people can review new/alternative information, respectfully voice even fight for alternative views, challenge existing 'off limit' topics and allow others to take (or leave) some of our idea and mix and mash with other thoughts, until something 'innovative' pops up.

One of the things I love about being a Thought Leader Mentor, and part of the Thought Leader community, is that I get to do this, with a variety of people who are already leading thinkers in their field. In every conversation where an innovative product or service popped up, we never started with trying to find a 'new' product of service. In every case innovative thinking was the objective and 'new' products and services were the outcome!
