Trust & Authenticity

I keep reminding my Leadership D.N.A clients about the importance of being authentic and building authentic workplace cultures. This came to mind again as I was reading about web technology advances, in linking all aspects of our internet life.

I keep reminding my Leadership D.N.A clients about the importance of being authentic and building authentic workplace cultures. This came to mind again as I was reading about web technology advances, in linking all aspects of our internet life.

As social media becomes an increasing influence on businesses, the continuing encouragement from such media sites to be more open, paradoxically while enjoying the anonymity of an avatar (or false identity) poses interesting dilemmas for people who are not authentic.

Having separate social network pages, anonymous blog posts and various identities within networks, will, according to the possibilities of technology, become increasingly pointless. Already social media companies are offering, and in some cases just automatically initiating, ways to connect our whole internet life. So it will become easier for people to 'see all of you' on the world wide web.

Similarly, as collaboration is being increasingly encouraged within and between organizations, how easy will become to go through our work day operating from different identities? One for when we're with clients, one for the sales team, or in the finance dept, going through the machine shop, having lunch with the boss or being at friday drinks and then there's the office xmas party!

How much easier it is when we are authentic. Just one identity to focus on, easier for us to remember who we are in any situation, and easier for others to know who we are, and will be, in any situation.

I regularly hear leaders talk about trust. Saying "who can we trust" "how do we know who we can trust" "can we trust 'them"... Well try this. Trust is not the issue. The issue is identity. If you are being authentic, having one identity, you can always be trusted to be exactly you are. You just may not be who others want you to be!
