Business as Unusual
Business hasn't been usual for quite some time now. Changes happening all around us have been enough to ensure business is not and will not be usual again. Change in the form of ;
  • The interconnected nature and fragility of an increasingly global economy
  • The ever advancing pace of new technology in industries ranging from communication  to entertainment, mass media and medicine.
  • Environmental and social
  • The seemingly never ending revelations of corporate and political corruption or mismanagement of funds, trust and brands
  • Global regional and local merger and acquisitions. (A client of mine commented recently that in the time she has owned her impressive Jaguar car, she has seen its parent company change national ownership three times.)

Because of these continuing types of changes, many organisations have come to experience change management as second nature, for others there is an urgent need to play catch up.

In my experience however, even the more effective change agents often miss the fact that any change in the environment, economy, politics, structure, leadership, ownership, technology, markets, competition, value or fashion is always interpreted by and adjusted to ( or not) by a culture.

The next time your organisation  speaks of, or plans for change ponder some questions like;

  • Do we understand our culture well enough to predict the impact of these changes? What will this change symbolise and mean to the people it affects?
  • How will our current culture embrace or resist the intended changes?
  • What key differences will such change make to our culture? Is this desirable or acceptable?
  • Is this change sustainable given the strength of our current culture?
