Belonging & Recognition

For many people in organizations, having a sense of belonging is often dependent on having a sense of being valuable to others and the organizations. Having a specific role a area of expertise or contribution and even a feeling of uniqueness all support people to feel that they belong. Why is this ?

Knowing who we are as individuals and where we fit into the whole as individuals, is a powerful connecting social force. Small groups have the advantage of making uniqueness easily identifiable. It is in and through these 'tribes' that we most often contribute, and are acknowledged for doing so in real time. Mass acknowledgment and recognition from the whole wider company happens less often (think awards at annual conferences).

The point. Focus on ongoing recognition initiatives for local 'tribes' as a key to building engagement in your organization. (Rather than one off, large scale initiatives addressed at the whole company.)

Want to make a change?
What activities and initiatives to foster and boost engagement do your managers offer or could offer in a low scale, at a local level ?
How aware are your managers of their value in building engagement at local levels of culture ?
What could be done to raise their awareness of their value ?
